A major redevelopment of Newton Abbot Market Hall is set to be completed within weeks, marking the final stage of an ambitious project to revitalise one of the town’s most historic landmarks.
Work began in November 2024 to transform the Grade II listed building and surrounding Market Square into a modern, flexible space for shopping, dining and events, while preserving its long-standing heritage.
The Market Hall, which has been at the heart of Newton Abbot’s trading life since the 19th century, has traditionally served as a focal point for local commerce. The latest regeneration aims to ensure it continues to play a central role in the town centre’s future.
The updated space will feature street food units, a bar, improved retail areas and flexible space for pop-up stalls and community events, allowing it to operate throughout the day and into the evening.
As part of the restoration, sections of a 1970s extension have been removed to reveal the original Market Square frontage, while a new central staircase has been installed to enhance the interior layout. Access has also been improved with a new entrance from Market Street and the reinstatement of a pedestrian link between Alexandra Cinema and Market Square.
Outside, the square itself has been upgraded with new paving, seating and planters, along with infrastructure such as outdoor electricity points to support events and markets.
The project has been funded through the UK Government’s Future High Streets Fund and is part of wider efforts to boost town centres by adapting historic spaces for modern use.
David Palethorpe, Deputy Leader of Teignbridge District Council and Cabinet Member for Economy, Estates and Major Projects, said:
“We’re thrilled with how the regeneration project has transformed the Market Hall into a dynamic civic space and we’re really looking forward to seeing residents and visitors make the most of the space to socialise, shop, eat and enjoy a programme of exciting events.
“We’re very grateful to all the market traders, local businesses and residents for their patience throughout the redevelopment.”
The revamped Market Hall is expected to play a key role in shaping Newton Abbot’s markets quarter into a vibrant destination, combining its historic character with a renewed focus on community, culture and commerce.
