Exeter has been ranked as one of the best locations in the UK for outdoor entertaining this spring, according to new research into the country's garden party "hotspots".
The city placed third in a national leaderboard, as a study suggested that a combination of larger-than-average gardens and high levels of seasonal sunshine make the South West a prime location for the "al-fresco" lifestyle.
The research, conducted by event insurance provider Protectivity, comes as online interest in garden parties and outdoor gatherings surges ahead of the Easter and May bank holidays.
According to the study, which analysed factors including garden size, sunshine hours, and local noise complaint rates, Bournemouth took the top spot, followed by Plymouth and Exeter.
While coastal and southern cities dominated the top of the table, eastern locations like Cambridge and Norwich also scored highly due to consistently drier spring conditions.
| Rank | City | Key Factors |
| 1 | Bournemouth | Large gardens, low noise complaints |
| 2 | Plymouth | High sunshine hours, South West climate |
| 3 | Exeter | Strong "al-fresco" infrastructure |
| 10 | London | High sunshine, but smaller gardens |
The data reveals a significant shift in how Britons are planning to spend their spring weekends. Searches for "garden parties" have risen by 328 per cent recently, while interest in "street parties" has grown by 87 per cent compared to last year.
Hosting expert Victoria Parkinson suggested the trend is driven by a desire to "shake off the winter" after months of cold weather.
"The first spring evening where everyone can actually sit outside without a coat feels like a collective exhale," she said. "Being in the open air, people feel more relaxed so conversation flows a lot more easily."
To ensure transparency regarding the rankings, the research team used a multi-point scoring system:
Garden Size: Analysed using regional property data to find the highest proportion of large outdoor spaces.
Weather: Calculated using average spring sunshine hours and rainfall levels per city.
Community: Ranked based on "noise tolerance," using the number of formal noise complaints per capita in each local authority.
Search Trends: Google search data was used to track the rise in demand for BBQs and garden equipment, which typically peaks in April.
If you are planning to make the most of Exeter’s "hotspot" status this Easter, experts recommend:
Preparing for the "British ritual": Keep blankets and umbrellas on standby for unpredictable April showers.
Simplicity is key: Use seasonal supermarket blooms in mismatched jars rather than expensive floral arrangements.
The "icebreaker": Offer a drink to guests immediately upon arrival to set the tone for the event.
