A brand-new endurance running event is set to launch on Dartmoor National Park this autumn, challenging participants to take on one of the South West’s toughest landscapes while raising funds for charity.

The Dartmoor Beast, organised by Hospiscare, will take place on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The race will start and finish at Okehampton Community and Recreation Association (OCRA) in Okehampton.

Runners can choose between two demanding routes: a 20-mile challenge known as “The Beast”, or the shorter 14-mile “Wee Beastie”. Both courses traverse rugged moorland, woodland trails, rivers and boggy terrain, with steep climbs including the ascent of High Willhays, the highest point in southern England.

The full route includes 3,399 feet of elevation, while the shorter option climbs 2,224 feet, offering a significant test for even experienced trail runners.

Participants will receive a fully supported, chip-timed race experience, with aid stations along the route. All finishers will be awarded a medal and a traditional Devon cream tea at the finish line, while prizes will be given to the fastest male and female competitors.

Entry fees start from £27, with places limited for the inaugural event. Organisers have confirmed that £2 from every entry will be donated to the Dartmoor National Park Authority to support conservation and access across the moor.

Martin Stokke, Race Director for Hospiscare, said: “The Dartmoor Beast is an exciting addition to the South West’s running calendar. It combines the raw beauty of Dartmoor with a tough physical challenge, all while raising vital funds for Hospiscare. Whether you are looking to take your fitness to new heights or hoping to be one of very first to conquer The Dartmoor Beast, this event is not to be missed.”

The course will include uneven ground, exposed granite, river crossings and sections of bog, with organisers warning runners to be prepared for challenging conditions. Participants will be required to navigate using a GPX file, supported by marshals and route markers, and must maintain a minimum pace, with cut-off points in place for safety.

Hospiscare provides specialist end-of-life care for patients and families across Exeter, central and east Devon, including North Dartmoor. With only around a quarter of its funding coming from the NHS, the charity relies heavily on donations and fundraising events such as this to continue its work.
