Dartmoor Preservation Association launches fund to boost access projects

Proceeds raised for the backpack camping court case is now to be returned to the community

Dartmoor Preservation Association launches fund to boost access projects

A new grant scheme aimed at improving access to Dartmoor National Park has been launched following the successful legal campaign to retain the right to backpack camping on the moor.
The Dartmoor Preservation Association (DPA) has introduced its Public Access Fund, inviting applications from grass-roots groups and organisations to support projects that help more people connect with the landscape.
The fund has been created using proceeds from the high-profile legal case, which culminated in a landmark Supreme Court victory confirming the right to wild camping on Dartmoor. The DPA says it now wants to “return” that success to communities by funding initiatives that remove barriers to access.
Projects supported by the fund could take many forms. These include improving physical access through footpath clearance, bridge repairs or better signage; building confidence through guided walks or navigation training; and developing skills such as drystone walling, hedge laying and ecological surveying. Cultural and creative projects celebrating Dartmoor’s heritage are also encouraged.
DPA chief executive Tom Usher said: “We are excited to launch the Dartmoor Public Access Fund in 2026. This initiative will give funding to grass-roots access projects and return the proceeds of the successful Backpack Camping campaign to as many people as possible. The DPA want to turbo-charge equality of access to Dartmoor National Park.
"Walking, farming, climbing, birdwatching, riding, kayaking, culture, tramper, however you enjoy Dartmoor, there is something in the DPA's Public Access Fund. We are looking for innovative projects that need £500-£3000 to get new users and young people up onto Dartmoor. Knowledge dispels fear, so come and get to know the Moor. You are very welcome.
"The landmark backpack camping victory in the Supreme Court was the work of many, so we want to return the proceeds to as many people as possible. The Dartmoor Public Access Fund is designed to support those who want to come to Dartmoor but might find it hard for any reason; individuals, clubs, teams."
The association said improving access is not only about wellbeing and inclusion, but also about safeguarding Dartmoor’s future. By helping more people build a connection with the landscape, it hopes to inspire a new generation of informed and committed custodians.
Dartmoor has been shaped by human activity since the Mesolithic period and remains both a cultural landscape and an important habitat for wildlife. The DPA believes that increasing access, alongside education, will help more people understand and protect it.
Applications are open to individuals, schools, charities, community interest companies, collectives and businesses based in or near Dartmoor.
Further details and application information can be found on the Dartmoor Preservation Association website.
