Matt Taylor was disappointed with his team's performance
Exeter City manager Matt Taylor branded his side’s defending “indefensible” after they were beaten 2-0 by Wigan Athletic at the Brick Community Stadium.
City fell behind inside the opening minutes, conceding from an unmarked header — something Taylor said set the tone for the afternoon.
“We've given them yet another awful goal, it's indefensible. I can't describe it any other way,” he said.
The early setback prompted a quick change, with Timur Tutierov replaced by Josh Magennis before the 15-minute mark.
Taylor said the switch improved his side’s performance.
“We made the change to give the team something more to hold on to, and I thought we were better from that point on,” he said.
“From the change until the second goal we were in the game more, but we didn't have that quality on a difficult pitch to really hurt them.”
Despite an improved spell, Exeter were unable to find a breakthrough before Wigan added a second to secure the result.
The defeat leaves City facing a crucial run of fixtures against teams around them in the table.
