An Exeter resident who has spent years preserving the city’s wartime history has been formally recognised by the Defence Secretary for his work commemorating a Polish RAF squadron that helped defend Exeter during the Second World War.
Michael Parrott was presented with a letter of recognition from the Secretary of State for Defence, John Healey MP, by Exeter MP Steve Race.
The letter thanks Mr Parrott for his long-standing efforts to research, record and promote the history of the Polish 307 Squadron and its connection to Exeter.
The 307 Squadron, known as the “Lwow Eagle Owls,” was made up of Polish airmen serving with the Royal Air Force and played a key role in defending Exeter during the Exeter Blitz of 1942.

The city suffered heavy bombing by the Luftwaffe, with large parts of the centre destroyed and thousands of homes damaged.
The squadron’s night-fighter missions were critical in limiting the destruction and protecting civilians, a contribution now commemorated annually.
Exeter Guildhall, a historic building on the High Street dating back to the 14th century and rebuilt in the 1680s, has become the focal point for remembering the squadron.
Each year, the Polish flag is raised outside the Guildhall, accompanied by an exhibition curated by Mr Parrott that explores the lives, service, and legacy of the squadron’s members.
Mr Parrott is closely involved with the 307 Squadron Project, a British-Polish charitable organisation established to research and promote the squadron’s role, described as a “brave band of brothers.”
The organisation aims to strengthen international cooperation and preserve the memory of these airmen for future generations.
As part of this work, the 307 Squadron Project will host a special public event at Exeter Guildhall later this year.
Night Fighters of Exeter – The story of 307 Squadron will take place on 14 and 15 November 2025, offering exhibitions and talks on the squadron’s vital wartime contributions.
In his letter, the Defence Secretary praised Mr Parrott’s dedication to local history and highlighted the importance of community-led efforts in recognising the service of Armed Forces personnel, particularly those from allied nations who defended British cities during the war.
Steve Race MP said it was important to acknowledge individuals who devote their time to preserving Exeter’s heritage.
He noted his admiration for Mr Parrott’s work at several city events, including the annual Guildhall commemoration.
“Having met Michael at several events in Exeter, including the annual raising of the Polish flag over the Guildhall, I was delighted to have the opportunity to tell the Defence Secretary about his years of work,” Mr Race said.
“I’m glad to have been able to pass on this letter as a small token of appreciation. Michael’s work brings to life an important chapter of Exeter’s history and ensures the contribution of Polish airmen is remembered by future generations.”
