Families at Isca Academy in Exeter have received more than 100 Christmas hampers as part of a community initiative delivered in partnership with local organisation The Big Step.

The scheme, now in its second year, is aimed at supporting pupils and families during the festive period, with a particular focus on those navigating the transition from primary to secondary school.

Funding for the hampers was secured by Dan Leverton of The Big Step, enabling them to be provided at no cost to families. Each hamper contained a selection of festive items intended to offer practical support during the winter period.

Isca Academy, which is part of the Ted Wragg Trust, said the initiative forms part of wider efforts to support families alongside educational provision.

Headteacher Vicki Joyce said: “These hampers represent more than practical help — they create moments of celebration, connection and care for our families when it matters most.”

Moira Marder, Chief Executive of the Ted Wragg Trust, highlighted the role of local partnerships in supporting school communities.

“Strong community partnerships like this reflect our shared commitment to supporting students and families beyond the classroom,” she said. “The generosity shown by The Big Step makes a real difference.”

The Big Step is best known locally for its transition programme for pupils moving from Year 6 to Year 7.

The programme supports hundreds of pupils each year through a week-long summer initiative combining literacy and numeracy support with activities designed to help students prepare for secondary school.
