Devon Trading Standards warns Christmas shoppers to check toy safety before buying

Parents and carers across Devon are being urged to check toys carefully before buying them this Christmas, as Trading Standards warns that some cheaper products on the market may be unsafe.

Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service said rising living costs and an increase in online bargain deals mean more families may be looking for low-priced toys, including from sellers outside the UK. 

However, officers say these items do not always meet UK safety standards.

Ben Newell, Trading Standards Team Manager, said shoppers should be cautious when buying toys from websites they are not familiar with.

“If an offer looks too good to be true, it probably is,” he said. “Always check that toys carry a CE or UKCA mark, which shows they’ve been tested against strict safety regulations. Avoid products without these marks and make sure you know who you’re buying from.”

The service has released a short film highlighting simple safety checks families can carry out before wrapping gifts. The advice includes:

• Look for CE or UKCA marks
• Follow age guidance on packaging
• Check toys for loose stitching, small detachable parts and secure battery compartments
• Keep magnets and plastic packaging away from young children

Councillor Simon Clist, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for Trading Standards, said the aim is to help families avoid unnecessary risks.

“Christmas should be a time of joy, not worry,” he said. “By taking a few simple precautions, families can ensure their gifts are safe and avoid unnecessary risks. We want everyone to have a happy and safe festive season.”

Trading Standards also reminded residents that if they buy toys online and the product is unsafe or not as described, they are normally entitled to a refund.

The warning comes during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year, with many families across Dartmoor and nearby towns already preparing for Christmas events and school holidays.
