An estimated 15,000 people flocked to Torquay’s waterfront for the opening night of the Bay of Lights Illumination Trail on Friday 28 November.
The harbourside and seafront were transformed into a festive spectacle, culminating in a firework display that marked the start of the trail’s fourth year. The event was delivered in partnership by Torbay Council, the English Riviera BID Company, and Torquay Independent Business Owners (TIBO).
Families, friends and even dogs enjoyed the lights, interactive displays and the newly opened Torre Abbey Christmas Market with its Alive with Light show.
A new feature this year is a real ice rink at Abbey Park, which opens on Saturday 6 December.
The rink will operate until Friday 2 January 2026, with sessions Monday to Thursday 4pm–9pm, Friday 2pm–9pm, and weekends 11am–9pm. Parent and toddler sessions are available on Fridays from 11am–1pm.
Each session lasts 45 minutes, with additional time for entering and exiting. The rink is wheelchair accessible and can operate in all weather conditions.
Cllr Jackie Thomas, Torbay Council’s Cabinet Member for Tourism, Culture & Events, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying the first night of the Bay of Lights. Please keep supporting our festive programme, including the exciting new ice rink opening this weekend.”

Carolyn Custerson, CEO of the English Riviera BID Company, added: “Events like the Bay of Lights are not only a way to celebrate the festive season but also boost the local economy, attracting thousands of visitors and supporting local businesses.”
Visitors are encouraged to explore Torquay town centre, where streets including Union Street, Fleet Street, Swan Street and Brunswick Square are illuminated with Christmas lights, offering shopping, dining and seasonal activities.
