Business owners in Ashburton have joined together to recreate the dance routine from XMAS, Kylie Minogue’s 2025 Christmas single, as part of a community video celebrating the town and its independent shops.

The group produced the film to bring attention to Ashburton’s late-night Christmas shopping evening, which will take place on Thursday 4 December.

Ashburton, on the edge of southern Dartmoor, is known for its mix of long-established traders, small independents and creative businesses.

The video was organised by Glen Middleham, co-owner of stationery and gift shop PAD on West Street in Ashburton.

After suggesting the idea, he brought together shopkeepers, café owners and other traders who agreed to learn and perform the routine, many of whom had no previous dance experience.

Glen said: “Ashburton really does go XMAS with Kylie! We’ve had great fun recreating the routine, it looks simple, but it’s deceptively complex.

“The last couple of weeks have been fantastic: we’ve supported and encouraged each other, and I’m incredibly proud of everyone who stepped out of their comfort zone.

“We all love running our businesses here, and we want to shout about what makes Ashburton so special.”

The group filmed in several locations around the town, including outside shops taking part in the late-night event, and the final version has been uploaded to YouTube for residents and visitors to watch.

The late-night shopping evening on 4 December will run from 4pm and feature community activities such as carol singing, mulled wine and mince pies, craft stalls, author talks and book signings.

Organisers say Father Christmas will also be visiting during the evening, with many traders expecting increased footfall as the event has grown in popularity in recent years.

Planning for the event has been led by a group of local businesses, including Tess Coulson of Tess Designs.

She said: “We’re really excited about this year’s late-night shopping evening. The creativity, collaboration and community spirit from everyone involved has been fantastic. We’re determined to make it a memorable night for visitors of all ages.”

Residents who cannot attend will still be able to visit shops, cafés and restaurants throughout December.
