The owner of the world-wide Fragrance Group made a surprise guest appearance as the Hotel Indigo opened its doors for the first time today on Torquay seafront.

Koh Wee Meng cut the ribbon on the impressive boutique hotel as the sun shone brightly on the sea just across the main waterfront road.

The Singapore-based billionaire and the Fragrance Group have ploughed millions of pounds into the English Riviera in the past couple of years.

Hotel Indigo, which follows in the footsteps of the group’s Mercure and Ibis hotels on Paignton seafront and was built on the site of the old Corbyn Head Hotel, is owned by the Fragrance Group but managed by IHG Hotels & Resorts.

Mr Koh Wee Meng, Chairman and CEO of Fragrance Group, said: “We are extremely proud to have signed and opened our first hotel with IHG Hotels & Resorts on the beautiful English Riviera, and we are excited to see where this partnership will lead."

James Farley, General Manager at Hotel Indigo Torquay, said: “We are delighted to introduce the Hotel Indigo brand  to the heart of Torquay, a destination celebrated for its nostalgic charm and exceptional coastal setting. “This thoughtfully  designed hotel combines a relaxed coastal ambience with a refined, design-led aesthetic and a strong connection to the local community, perfectly reflecting the spirit of the English Riviera. We look forward to welcoming guests from near and  far to experience the hotel, unwind in comfort, and create lasting memories.”

Hotel Indigo is part of IHG Hotels & Resorts luxury and lifestyle portfolio.

The company said: “Just as no two neighbourhoods are alike, no two Hotel Indigo properties are alike. Each is designed to uniquely reflect the  local culture, character, and history of the surrounding area.

“Celebrating Torquay’s rich maritime heritage, Hotel Indigo  Torquay is a testament to the town’s exciting revival.

“Every detail throughout the property is inspired by its vibrant seaside  surroundings, using sandy tones, artisan decor and bold colourways that ensure the local neighbourhood is woven into  the very heart of the hotel’s character and charm.

“After exploring the streets that were once walked by icons like Agatha Christie, John Cleese, and Charles Darwin, guests  can retreat to one of 153 thoughtfully designed rooms and suites.

“Influenced by the nearby coastline, each space blends  comfort with modern luxuries, such as Nespresso coffee machines, bath robes, cosy slippers and Biology shower and  body products. From wave-patterned wallpaper to serene blue tones, every detail reflects the beauty of the local bays,  beaches, and ever-changing tides.”

It adds: “Aligning with Hotel Indigo’s restaurant ethos and designed to become the heart of the hotel, Root & Reef Bistro celebrates the tastes and traditions of Torquay’s fishing and farming heritage.

“Here, the ocean’s freshest catch meets the  finest Devonshire produce – brought straight from land and sea to table.

“Up in The Cast rooftop bar, it’s the drinks that  steal the show. Opening in Spring 2026, the rooftop bar will give sweeping panoramic views of the bay and its sailing  boats. There’s no better spot to enjoy handcrafted cocktails, signature serves and tempting small plates. The Cast draws  its name from Torquay’s literary icon Agatha Christie - paying homage to her cast of unforgettable characters, while also  inviting guests to ‘cast’ their gaze over the stunning English Riviera.”

The hotel also offers guests a state-of-the-art wellness suite, with rejuvenating treatment rooms and a fitness  centre with showstopping views of the glistening bay.

The hotel is dog-friendly. For more information on Hotel Indigo Torquay, visit the hotel’s website here, or follow @ihghotels, @hotelindigo and  @hotelindigotorquay on Instagram, and @ihghotels and @hotelindigotorquay on TikTok.
