Bovey Castle has launched a public appeal to help crack a festive mystery after the disappearance of one of its most treasured Christmas decorations — the star that traditionally crowns its 17-foot Christmas tree in the historic Cathedral Room.
The five-star Dartmoor resort, which has celebrated Christmas within the room since it became a hotel in 1928, will release a playful series of daily ‘whodunnit’ teaser reels across its social media platforms from 1 December. The reels will follow a fictional private investigator as they search the grounds, gather clues and interview a cast of quirky suspects, with the mystery set to conclude on 11 December.
Among those in the frame are Executive Head Chef Mark Budd, Activities Manager Dani Garland and Shopkeeper Sophia Newman, who all feature in the unfolding storyline.
The campaign will run on Bovey Castle’s Facebook, Instagram and TikTok accounts, where viewers can submit their guesses. Anyone commenting with their verdict will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win an afternoon tea for two at the luxury resort.
Dean Gunston, General Manager at Bovey Castle, said: “This ‘whodunnit’ series is an alternative take on the traditional advent calendar, and enables people across the South West and beyond to capture a glimpse of Bovey’s magical festive setting in a fun, light-hearted way.
“Our resort is always a popular choice for those wanting to experience various elements of a traditional British Christmas, including comfy fireside chats under our signature Christmas trees, numerous festive dining options, and picturesque countryside walks across acres of Dartmoor countryside.
“And while I don’t want to give too much away on the ‘whodunnit’, even the biggest Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts among us would struggle to ‘take the reins’ and identify the guilty party in this one!”
The hotel, known for its lavish festive décor and sweeping views across Dartmoor National Park, is encouraging the public to follow along and help solve the light-hearted Christmas caper.
