Bideford boxing club finished the year off with seven boxers competing in Wales over the weekend.
Rocky Grigg was one of the five boxers competing in Port Talbot. Grigg faced Welsh Champion Dion Jones from Cardigan. Grigg started sharp behind straight punches to back Jones up with scoring blows.
In the second, Jones changed his tactics and stood toe to toe with Grigg, the pair traded off with big shots to head and body. A right uppercut from Grigg split the nose of Jones, as the Bideford boxer took over in another dominant round.
Both boxers went out again at a frantic pace, big body shots from Grigg slowed Jones down and as the round went on, the Bideford boxer switched the attack back upstairs, landing power shots over the top to seal the points win. Grigg and Jones were commended for their skill and bravery, and awarded bout of the night.
Andy Mitchell topped the bill in a rematch with Davey Joseph from Port Talbot. Joseph started well, boxing and moving behind a fast jab. In the second round, Mitchell went out with more urgency and caused Joseph all sorts of problems, trapping him on the ropes and mixing his shots up well.
It was level going into the last, Joseph was visibly tired and Mitchell was taking advantage, letting his hands go and scoring well. Mitchell went in for the big finish and got caught with a big right hook, receiving a standing count, which ultimately cost him the fight as he lost by a split decision. Although he didn’t get the result, Mitchell will take confidence from a career-best performance.
Coby Allcorn put in a strong performance against Max Kirkwood from Cardigan. Allcorn fired a strong jab down the middle, setting up his attacks. In the second, Allcorn began to vary his shots, landing nice right uppercuts and hooks around the side. Allcorn carried his form into the last, showing some classy boxing, hitting the target and making his opponent miss to take the points win.
James Birch made it two wins out of his first two contest as he beat Theo Anderson from Penarth. Birch used his reach to good effect in the first round with long clean shots.
In the second, Birch went up the gears adding the right crosses in forcing two standing counts in the round. Birch carried his dominance into the last round with Anderson glad to reach the final bell as the Bideford boxer got the points win.
A slow start cost Tremayne Reeves against Niall Bunce from Llanishan. Bunce an aggressive southpaw put the pressure on Reeves with a big punch out put in the first. Reeves stood his ground in the second having more success landing right crosses in a better round, but the Llanishan boxer was looking for quantity over quality.
In the last, Tremayne had his best round of the fight pushing Bunce back rocking him with a big over hand right. It was too little too late for Reeves who fell short by a split decision.
Bideford also had two boxers featuring in Llanelli on the first ever Neuro-Diverse boxing show. It was a night of exhibitions featuring professional boxers. Bideford’s Frankie Fry and Leanne Upton impressed showing plenty of skill. Both faced off against World Champions, Frankie Fry with Gavin Rees and Leanne Upton with Lauren Bryant. The event was a huge success and is thought to be the first of many around the Country.
Bideford boxer Tremayne Reeves was top of the bill in Torbay against Sonny Dorian from the host club.
Reeves was defending his light heavyweight Western Counties Belt, but the vastly more experienced Dorian proved a stiff test. Dorian had great hand speed and dominated the early exchanges with flurries.
In round two, Reeves pulled his way back into the fight with power shots to rough up Dorian. Dorian pulled away in the last, not getting involved and moving his feet in and out of range as he was scoring to take the points win.
