Bideford boxers share ring for Europe’s best

Fantastic showing at the Riviera Cup

Bideford Boxing Club had a strong squad of five boxers competing in the Riviera Box Cup, a two-day international tournament featuring some of Europe’s best boxers.

Rocky Grigg won Gold with a unanimous points win again Logan Lee from Sudbury ABC. After a tight first round, Grigg started working the body shots, slowing the taller man down in a dominant round second round. In the last, Grigg upped his work rate getting stronger throughout, big uppercuts and right crosses doing the damage on way to winning the title.

Riley Chappell picked up a silver medal, losing in the final to John Lee from Feltham. Lee had a good opening round but the pressure got to him in the second as Chappell punched his way back into the fight. The last round was back and forth, leaving it hard for the judges to split them at the bell.

Chloe Murphy gave experience away to National Champion Anya Wilson from Blue Flames ABC but didn’t go down without a fight. Both girls went toe to toe for three rounds, Wilson’s experience shone through in the end, pulling away to a split points decision as Murphy took silver.

Alex Dovell won silver, losing in his final against Cameron Webb from Intense. Webb used his range well in the opening couple of rounds. Dovell roughed him up in the last but ultimately it was too late to change the result as he lost a unanimous points decision.

Jed Avery lost on points in his semi-final to collect bronze against Amin Khan from Aintree ABC. Avery set a good pace but found himself missing against a tidy boxer.
