Pictures: Torrington enjoys a sun-kissed Mayfair

Great Torrington celebrates another successful Mayfair with plenty of music, dance and spectacle

Glorious sunshine added an extra sparkle to Great Torrington’s annual Mayfair celebrations, kicking off on Thursday (May 1) for the traditional opening day.

A service, country dancing and entertainment from Torrington Cavaliers and the Littleham Howlers began a busy programme of events in the town square, culminating in the Proclamation of the May Fair and the crowning of the May Queen, followed by maypole dancing.

This year’s queen is Olivia Perry, crowned by Coral Guppy and joined by heralds Reuben Pascoe and Tanner-James West, standard bearer Oscar Bidwell plus attendants are Isabel Armstrong, Sophia Plows, Luna Owens-Blaker, Freya Bettiss, Ava Tyler, Lillie Turner, Lily Shaw and Violet Heal.

Friday saw the popular Round the Tree Race in the town, with 2.75 mile races for seniors and 1.75 miles for juniors, then on Saturday it was the turn of the Torrington Fancy Dress Music Festival.

This event has for now replaced the traditional carnival and has also proved popular, with more than 30 performers at 11 venues around the town from the afternoon onwards.

There was a fancy dress walking carnival in the evening, with a variety of costumed characters from Mario Bros to an Avatar duo and the Ghostbusters to Hillbillies taking to the streets.
