Hundreds of Santas ride through Devon

Hundreds of Santas ride through Devon for children’s hospice

Hundreds of bikers dressed as Santa Claus rode through Devon on Saturday, 14 December, for the annual Santa’s on a Bike fundraiser in aid of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

While the total amount raised this year has yet to be confirmed, organisers are hopeful it will surpass last year’s £4,000, which was raised with approximately 100 participants.

This year’s event drew almost 250 bikers.

One of the event organisers, Paul Lynham, said: “Regarding the day, we were expecting a larger than usual attendance with the Bristol and Plymouth rides being cancelled due to Storm Darragh. We were still amazed at the numbers that arrived, many from Bristol, Plymouth and all over the South West, as well as one Santa who rode from London on Saturday morning to join us in Taunton.”

The ride began in Taunton and made its way to South Molton, where participants were greeted by South Molton Town Council and the Mayor.

Paul expressed gratitude for the support: “We really can’t thank everyone enough for their support from start to finish, whether they be a rider, pillion, marshal, or helper at the start, middle or finish, or one of the hundreds of people that came out to see us in Taunton, Wellington, Tiverton and of course South Molton where our stop-off is hosted by South Molton Town Council and we are welcomed by the Mayor.”

Riders were treated to hot drinks and pasties at South Molton, provided by Network Plus. The convoy then continued its journey through Bideford and Instow, finishing at Little Bridge House in Fremington.

Reflecting on the finale, Paul said: “We always get an amazing welcome at Little Bridge House from staff, volunteers, and the families that are being cared for. It’s their smiles that make this such a worthwhile experience.”

Santa’s on a Bike is a volunteer-led event, with all donations going directly to CHSW.

The organisers emphasised that the event covers no expenses from the funds collected, ensuring every penny benefits the hospice’s work.

Plans are already underway for future rides.

The Summer Santa Cruise will take place on the last Sunday of June, while next year’s Santa’s on a Bike to Little Bridge House is scheduled for Saturday, 13 December.
