Pictures: Fair skies for the return of Combe Martin Carnival

Popular village carnival parade takes to the streets once again

Combe Martin Carnival returned to the village over the weekend after a year off but the community turned out in force to join in with and support the popular parade.

Saturday evening saw the carnival procession with a good mix of floats and walkers make its way down the mile-long village street to the seaside.

The Noah’s Ark float was thankfully not needed as the procession enjoyed fair skies, featuring an array of inventive floats and costumes including many ‘Barbies’, pirates, a ‘Village Hoedown’ and much more.

The carnival has always been a popular summer fixture in the village but was unable to go ahead last year and prior to that saw disruption due to the pandemic, so the community was delighted a hard-working committee of volunteers had ensured its return, albeit as a weekend rather than a full week.

This year’s carnival queen was Charlene Perry, with senior queen Diana Clarke, junior queen Abbie Beard and carnival prince Billy Clarke, plus princesses Emily Cooper and Jessica Perry.

Noah’s Ark also won best float, while the best walking entry was awarded to the herd of dinosaurs, as judged by parish clerk Andrew Wyer.

On behalf of the carnival committee, chair Christina Perry said: “The carnival parade was very well turned out, especially considering the short notice people had. We were really happy, the floats looked great, the walkers equally as great and everyone that entered into the spirit really did give their all.

“We had helpers in place for marshalling and I can’t thank them enough for the great job they done. My committee as usual worked together very week. All in all a great night was had by everyone.

“As a committee we can only do so much - it’s the village turning out on the night that make it happen.”

Sunday was glorious weather and with a planned Beach Day, featuring kayak and raft races, Punch and Judy, children’s entertainment and a duck race. The beach was packed and people enjoyed the entertainment but unfortunately there were not enough entries for the races to go ahead.

But people have been pleased to see the carnival’s return and it is hoped the event will be back in 2025.

The event is not cheap to stage and will need the vital support of the community if it is to come back next year, so anyone who would like to support it is urged to make a donation if they can, by going to https://www.gofundme.com/f/combe-martin-carnival-2024-to-25
