A ‘little’ rain did not deter the crowds from the ever-popular Pilton Green Man Day on Saturday, making its return after two years off.
The festival of colour, spectacle and music started as ever at Barnstaple, Square, where the Green Man and co led a parade of colourful characters through the High Street and over to Pilton Street.

There, live music on outdoor stages, a street market, crafts, food and drink, charity stalls, street entertainers and the Green Man Bar and Pimm’s Tents awaited.
The festivities covered the whole of Pilton Street as well as the Rotary Gardens.

The Green Man, a common mythological figure who predates Christianity, is central to the festival and takes centre stage during two performances of the festival’s pageant during the day.
This depicts the initial conflict between the Green Man and the Prior of Pilton before reconciliation and the inclusion of the pagan figure within Pilton’s St Mary’s Church.
The festival was cancelled last year due to a reported lack of volunteers, but the community rallied around and ensured this year would go ahead.
It is a popular event in the Pilton and wider Barnstaple calendar, as well as for people across North Devon and despite rain almost the entire day, people turned out to show their support and have a good time.
