The 80th anniversary of D-Day and the beginning of the end of World War Two was marked in Barnstaple today (Thursday) with a special memorial service.
A large crowd gathered in Rock Park to pay their respects to the men who landed on the beaches of Normandy at 6.30am on June 6, 1944, in the largest amphibious invasion the world had ever seen.
The service opened with a lone piper and was led by the Reverend Dr Ben Williams, Vicar of Barnstaple, before the traditional last post, two minutes’ silence and laying of wreaths.
Before the service, people could enjoy a little 1940s nostalgia with a tea dance to 1940s wartime music on the Square alongside authentic WW2 vehicles and re-enactors in British and US wartime uniforms.
The event was organised by Barnstaple Town Council and people can also follow the town’s own D-Day Heritage Trail with full details online covering Barnstaple’s wartime history.
