Young Barum make cup progress

BARNSTAPLE U16s defeated arch rials Okehampton 10-3 in a Devon Cup game which showed the strength of rugby in the area.

Barum, with the forwards playing a solid mauling game to give a platform, were unlucky not to go ahead when Ethan Paddon was bundled into touch short of the line.

Okehampton broke into the Barum half and were awarded a penalty which the usually reliable Billy Searle was unable to convert.

This was a let off for Barum and they regrouped well and worked their way back up the pitch and again had a couple of chances that Michael Taylor and Gareth Sloman were unable to finish.

On the half-hour mark pressure from the visitors won them a deserved penalty as the home side strayed offside and Jordan Petherbridge kicked it for a 3-0 lead at half time.

Five minutes into the second half Barnrstaple scored the only try of the game.

A quick pass allowed Sean Davies to make a superb break, handing off a couple of defenders then throwing a lovely flat pass that Dom Thorne latched on to before running under the bar to leave Petherbridge the conversion.

Searle slotted a difficult kick to bring Okehampton back to a converted try behind.

Jacob Nash went close in the dying minutes for Barum, who are away to Cullompton in a friendly this weekend.

Barum’s Liam Ellis put in a Man of the Match performance in the tight and carried well in the loose.
