Young Barum do the double

BARNSTAPLE U14s completed a county double when they defeated Newton Abbot 38-33 to win the Devon Sevens competition at Plymstock.

The 15-a-side Devon Cup was already in the bag and victory in the Sevens gave Barum a perfect, unbeaten record for the season.

Every player in the 11-man squad played a crucial part and every player scored a try.

Forwards Kipper Sluman, Nat Bayet, Andy Black, Alexi Bulpet and Nick Harris, set up the platform for the backs to score tries.

Despite not having blistering pace out wide Barum still managed to score 42 tries, Sam Roberts top try scorer with eight closely followed by Nick Harris on six.

Heroic tackling from all the boys but in particular Sam Roberts, Isaac Hydleman and Nick Harris meant only four tries were conceded on the way to the final.

Barum beat Plymstock (44-0), Cullompton (34-5), Teignmouth (43-0) and Okehampton (34-5) to set up a meeting with Exetrer Saracens in the last four. Harris crossed twice in a narrow 19-14 victory.

The final was a ding-dong affair with Barnstaple forging three tries up on two occasions, only for Newton to come roaring back to leave the result in doubt up to the end.

It has been a busy few days for Barum, who were also in action against Warwickshire tourists Barkers Butts.

They scored five tries to one in a 31-5 victory Try scorers were Harris, Tom Karslake, Robbie Hume and Roberts (2), with conversions by Meadowcroft.

Barnstaple U13s overwhelmed their Barkers Butts’ counterparts 73-5.

Zac Venner scored four tries in the first half and other tries went to William Swales, Matthew Symons and Cameron Eckford in a half-time score of 37-5.

Barum continued to dominate in the second half with further tries from Venner, Will Knill (2), Noah Nash, Symons and Rob Squires. Conversions were added by Knill (3) and Symons.

Barnstaple U12s defeated tourists Wooton Bassett 40-5 with tries going to Edward May, Liam Rendell, Aaron Vella, Nathan Fouche and Tom Squires.

The U10s ended their season with a double header against Wooton Bassett and Barkers Butts.

After a tight first half they went on to beat Wooton 40-10 with tries by Dylan Gosling Miles Rees (3), Tom Swales, Jon Bond (2) and Max Mepsted.

Two games against Barkers Butts resulted 30-0 and 35-5 to Barum.

There were tries from Gus Dunbavin, Gosling, Tom Ballinger, Rees (2) and Sam Bithell in the first game and from Swales, Bithell, Rees, Gosling (2) and Magnus Carter-Burns (2) in the second.
