First – and only – game of the 2011 North Devon league programme ends in win for pub side

WREY Arms got the New Year off to a flier with a 2-0 derby win at rivals Landkey Town.

A healthy crowd turned out to watch the Sunday afternoon match at Millennium Green and there was plenty to cheer about in the early stages as the two sides contributed to a fierce encounter.

Both teams had been without a game since December 11 and the lack of match fitness – together with a Christmas break thrown into the mix – quickly produced its fair share of weary legs.

Wrey looked the more threatening as the first half wore on and began to take control of the game after the half hour mark.

They had been unable to find a way past an inspired Landkey keeper but all changed minutes before half-time when a quickly taken free kick caught the hosts napping and Simon Larcombe squeezed the ball home to put the visitors a goal up.

The second period was all one way traffic, with Lee Holding dominating the midfield for the Wrey. But goal number two didn’t arrive until 10 minutes from time when Tom Cheetham’s cross caused panic and Larcombe poached his second of the game.

The Wrey shut up shop to record their second clean sheet of the season.

The result – the first and only of the 2011 North Devon Football League programme so far – ensured the Intermediate One side stay on course for a second consecutive promotion.

Weather permitting, a full fixture list is planned for Saturday.

Among the stand-out games, Boca Seniors entertain Shamwickshire Rovers in the Premier Division, while in the Senior Division, Shammy Reserves will be hoping to inflict a first defeat of the season on local rivals Northam Lions.
