We have a pair of tickets to give away for Surfing Tommies, at the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe, on Wednesday, July 20!

Surfing Tommies is a theatrical production that first appeared in the region to great acclaim as part of the Barnstaple Fringe Theatrefest in 2009.

Set during, and in the aftermath of the First World War, this poignant drama follows the lives of three members of the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, on an incredible journey from the mines of Cornwall to the fields of Flanders and back home again. Along the way we meet mazed beauties, mad male voice choirs and the first surfers - neatly taking to the waves on what else but elegant coffin lids.

Partly based on real events, surfing Tommies is written by Cornish writer Alan M. Kent and won the ‘Hoyler An Gof’ award for best piece of poetry or drama in 2010.

It’s 1914 and fifteen year old John Henry Pascoe has just started work at North Wheal Leisure Mine, Perranporth. He’s paired up with experienced tributer, Jimmy ‘Dunkey’ Tamblyn, who bestows his wisdom about mining and maids upon his young pal. The con?ict that is occurring across the seas seems to the villagers to be nothing more than a distant threat, and life is generally happy – young love blossoms and the tin industry booms. However, after Reverend Hocking makes a rousing speech in the village promising glory to those who join up, Jimmy and John Henry ?nd themselves leaving the mines for the Duke of Cornwall’s light infantry, and at the start of a journey in which their lives will change forever.

Surfing Tommies is a moving tale of war and friendship, but ultimately one of redemption, forgiveness and hope. Though set in the early twentieth century, this darkly mischievous play makes comment on current con?icts around the world, and what it is like to be away from ‘where you d’belong t’be.’

Tickets are priced at 11; concessions 10; students 7.40; Friends’ offer 7. A 60p Love Arts payment also applies to each seat sold. There is also a 5 ticket price for young people. For further information or to book tickets, call the Box Office on 01271 324242 or visit
