Westward Ho! Follies resurrect Summer Show

Joseph Bulmer

An amateur dramatic society in Westward Ho! is attempting to revive an old tradition.

Westward Ho! Follies is an amateur dramatic group that meets in Kingsley Hall, Westward Ho! It started in 1949, and with the exception of 2021, it has staged a pantomime every year. In years gone by, the Follies also used to put on a summer show which delighted locals and tourists alike during the summer season.

This year, some of the members have decided to resurrect the summer show. It takes the form of a variety show, featuring songs, dances, sketches and poems; just like the Follies pantomimes, the cast features young and not so young members.

You will need to be quick to see the show though, as there will be only two performances: Friday 12th August at 7pm, and Saturday 13th August at 2pm. Tickets are available on the door, but booking is advisable – call Sarah on 07718 619642.

Ticket prices – Adults £6, children and recycled teenagers £5, family ticket (2 adults and 2 children, or 1 adult and 3 children) £20

There is no rest for the Follies cast after the variety show, as the following week they start the process for the next pantomime.

New members are always welcome, and they welcome all forms of help – you don’t have to act, as volunteers are needed to help make props and scenery, help with costumes, publicity, sound, lighting and backstage.

Come along to the Kingsley Hall schoolroom (entrance on Atlantic Way, next to the Village Inn) at 7pm on Tuesday, August 16, for a first read through of the script and to meet the members.
