ONE hundred and forty young footballers from 17 local schools took part in the Schools Football Festival at the Sandymere ground at Westward Ho!

Organiser Peter Evans, the schools liaison officer at Bideford Amateur Athletic Club, said this was a non-competitive event to gauge the abilities of the youngsters, who were put into groups according to their abilities.

Schools from across the Torridge area took part, including a team from Clovelly, which has only 12 pupils.

Students from Bideford College were among the referees.
