Volunteers needed to defend Ilfracombe hill fort

Joseph Bulmer

VOLUNTEERS are being invited to join a conservation project to unlock the Iron Age heritage of Hillsborough in Ilfracombe on Saturday, December 12.

The project seeks to preserve the earthworks on the old hill fort site and enable greater understanding of its archaeological importance.

It is being run by NDABS (North Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Biosphere Service) and the North Devon Council Parks team.

They believe community involvement is essential and no experience is necessary – just enthusiasm and a love of the outdoors. Meeting is 10am at the swimming pool car park.

Volunteers are initially needed to help clear scrub from the site to help prevent deterioration. Suitable clothing and footwear is essential. Tools will be available but if people can bring their own, as well as work gloves, that would be helpful.
