Village welcomes Street Pastors

BRAUNTON will next week become the first village to adopt the Street Pastors scheme.

A launch ceremony is being held at 7.30pm next Wednesday (Dec 8) at St Brannocks Rooms, involving the parish council, police, the four village churches, the community and the Ascension Trust, the national body which oversees Street Pastors.

Twenty local people have volunteered to go out on to the streets of the village, with others providing supporting roles.

Braunton’s initiative is a little different from those which have sprung up in towns and cities across the country.

It is aimed particularly at the problems associated with under age drinking and will start earlier in the evenings, although the pastors will also be there to support others in need of help.

The Street Pastors are Christian-based and specially trained for the work.
