Police issue fresh appeal for witnesses following fatal head-on crash

POLICE investigators believe a third vehicle may have been involved in fatal crash on the on the A386 between Bideford and Torrington yesterday morning (Monday).

Officers have issued a plea to motorists who may have been on that stretch of road to come forward as they could be vital witnesses.

They would like to hear from anyone who may have seen either car prior to the collision or the collision itself, and are particularly keen to speak to any HGV drivers in the area at the time of the incident.

The diver of a green Citroen Saxo, an unnamed local man in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene following the head-on collision with a black Ford people carrier, near the quarry at Weare Giffard at around 11.15am.

The six occupants of the Ford, registered to an address in Kent, suffered injuries ranging from minor cuts and bruises to more serious injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. The rear seat passengers – a man and a woman – were flown by air ambulance to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. There is no further update on their condition.

The Ford had been travelling in the direction of Bideford from Torrington and the Saxo was travelling in the other direction.

The road was closed for seven hours.
