Together we can look forward to 2022

North Devon Gazette

Relentless, exhausted, drained, anxious, stressed. These are all feelings which I am sure have resonated with you at some point during this pandemic. Â

I know for certain that by keeping hospice services running throughout this time, every team here at North Devon Hospice has felt – or is feeling – these emotions. Â

That said, as Chief Executive, I have also witnessed spirit, humour, resilience, kindness, patience, empathy and togetherness from my colleagues to the extent that I have never seen before. The good news is I know that these feelings are a far more powerful force. It is for this reason that I actually look to 2022 with huge optimism. Â

2022 will see North Devon Hospice providing even more care and support to you, the community that we serve. We will be increasing the services we are able to provide on our Bedded Unit at Deer Park in Barnstaple. This will reduce the need for certain treatments to be done at the hospital.Â

We will be adding nurses to both our Bedded Unit and our Community Nursing teams, to be able to sustain the level of care that our patients and families deserve, in the face of an ever-increasing demand. Â

We will also be increasing the amount of emotional support provided out in the community, to make sure everyone has better access to this vital part of our care. None of this would be possible without your support. Genuinely, none of this. Â

The positive attributes I have seen in our staff, I have also seen in you: kindness, thoughtfulness, heart. Given the circumstances and the struggles of your own, it would be understandable if such generosity and care for your local hospice were low down your priority list. But the opposite has been true. You have gone the extra mile to make sure local people get the care they need.Â

On behalf of everyone at the charity, here’s to a fantastic 2022. This storm will not last, they never do. What will last is how you have made patients and families feel as they face the impact of cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. Together, we have all survived our worst days yet. Together, we have so much to look forward to. Â
