Thumbs up for first Ilfracombe Arts Festival

THE first ever Ilfracombe Arts Festival seems to have struck a chord with local people and visitors alike who enjoyed the variety of artistic endeavour on show from Thursday to Sunday.

Despite some unpredictable weather, a range of more than 35 events and displays from dance to knitted gingerbread houses, photography to theatre, were able to go ahead at venues around the town.

It was all organised by Ilfracombe Arts College, plus the newly formed Lantern Arts and North Devon Theatres, with Ilfracombe Tourism Marketing Group, under the North Devon Festival umbrella.

“I was really pleased with the positive response I got from all the visitors,” said Peter Cooper, one of the festival coordinators.

“They were really complimentary about the quality and variety of the work on show. We saw a high number of people visiting the festival too.

On past occasions when the college has been open, fairly small numbers attended but this time it was much busier. There were locals and tourists who took the trouble to visit the many events throughout the town - and seemed to have a great time.”
