MUSICIANS from across North Devon and beyond will gather on Saturday for a third annual memorial gig to honour well known local musician John Morgan.

The reunion concert takes place at the Riversford Hotel at Limers Lane in Northam and admission is free. It will feature numerous former members of the Spirit of John Morgan Band from the 1969s onwards.

The band later became known simply as John Morgan and toured up and down the UK and around Europe, securing a four-year residency in the famous Marquee Club in London, playing alongside the likes of Jethro Tull.

Although John set up home in St Tropez in the South of France, he spent so much time on Torridgeside where he grew up that he was considered a local and between gigs further afield, he would often be found playing at venues in Bideford and the surrounding area.

The keyboard player used to appear regularly at Durrant House Hotel in Northam.

Saturday's memorial concert is the third since John's death and will include local musicians Mick Walker, Pete Leonard and Ricky Knight among many others.

Organiser Seamus Carr, from Bideford, was the band roadie and remembers well the endless trips to and from London, touring enroute in a circuit that took in Birmingham and the Lake District before winding its way to the capital and back towards North Devon.

"We had a fortnightly residency at the Marquee Club and at that time the other residents were Jethro Tull and 10 Years After," he recalled.

"Our lead guitarist was Mick Dolan, who now works with the Rolling Stones."

Rediscover the spirit of John Morgan at the Riversford Hotel on Saturday. The gig is free and all are welcome to simply turn up from 8pm.
