A new restaurant in Braunton has come up with a simple but ingenious idea to appeal to dieters and health conscious diners -an itemised menu which tells you exactly how many calories there is in each dish.Slim Jim's in Caen Street is the brainchild of Chris Horrell and his partner Virginia Mason, who believe it is the first of its kind."Healthy" doesn't mean rabbit food and crackers - the menu features a tasty-looking range of starters, mains and desserts freshly baked, poached, steamed or grilled using mainly local ingredients prepared by chef Steve Howell. But a quick look at the menu will tell diners their crab mousse contains 78 calories, the pork loin 270 and tuna steaks with noodles 356! There are also special dishes for diabetics or coeliacs, including "diabetic" ice cream and scones."We were struck by the question 'what is the main problem encountered by dieters or health conscious people when they go out for a meal?'" said Chris."The answer - no restaurant really caters for them or serves appetising dishes that anyone can enjoy and still stay on the right side of a healthy diet without feeling guilty."What is more, if you'd rather have a t-bone steak or lobster thermidor, just give us 24 hours notice and within reason we will cook anything to order."The founder of S&H Technical Support in Ilfracombe, Chris had always wanted to use his lighting and design know-how to create a restaurant, so along with the distinctive menu, the premises are impressively lit inside and out to create an excellent atmosphere for dining.Chris and Virginia - herself a classically trained chef - hope to continue their revolution further, by approaching slimming companies such as Weightwatchers, Slimming World and Rosemary Conley, to provide their recipes on the menu as well as house dishes.Four years ago, after suffering heart problems and diabetes, he joined several slimming organisations, losing six stones in the process and gaining the idea for his new venture.Call Slim Jim's on (01271) 813633.
