IMAGINATIVE, vibrant paintings with a touch of humour and folklore form the centrepiece of a local artist’s first solo exhibition when it opens in Barnstaple on Tuesday (May 13).

Sophie Cobb’s work will be on display at Furniture Magpie in Boutport Street until Saturday, May 17, with a special late night ‘open house’ on the Thursday (May 15) from 7-9pm.

Sophie grew up in North Devon and returned to the area five years ago after living and working in Wales for almost 20 years, as everything from a storyboard artist to a BBC short film director and a university lecturer.

Her playful, colourful pictures all have a story to tell and invite the viewer to wonder beyond the image.

“I believe art isn’t just for the select few, it’s for everyone to see and enjoy and my intention is to create images to be shared and communicated to a wide audience,” she said.

“My work explores the imagination, storytelling, and touches on folklore, myth, the domestic and the spiritual - all the things I love in life.

“I also love the vibrancy and the magic I see in nature and the beautiful countryside around us in North Devon, where I grew up. As a child I spent many hours playing in the fields near my childhood home and so a love of the countryside began early on.”

All are welcome to visit the exhibition at Furniture Magpie in 48 Boutport Street or visit Sophie’s website at
