ONE of the most well respected and influential artists on the British folk scene comes to The Plough Arts Centre in Torrington on Sunday. Maddy Prior, singer with Steeleye Span, is joined by gifted performers Giles Lewin and Hannah Jones for the only North Devon date scheduled on their national tour. Described as the voice of folk music, Maddys memorable career continues to unfold as she creates new music and continues to push the boundaries of the genre. The tour presents multi instrumentalist Giles, of the Carnival Band and a founder member of The Dufay Collective, as well as an expert in expert in both early and Arabic music. Fresh and talented musician and singer Hannah James is already making a name for herself as part of the Hannah James and Sam Sweeney duo. The combination of myself , Hannah and Giles has turned out to be a delightful box of surprises, said Maddy. Giles is a talented fiddle, bagpipe and recorder player and also a very accomplished singer. Hannah is one of the up-and-coming bright sparks who plays piano accordion to a superb standard, is a world class clog and step dancer and also a fluid and sympathetic singer. We have applied ourselves to a variety of material, from English traditional music and songs through Georgian, Bulgarian, klezmer, American and back to Medieval English. The gig starts at 7.30pm.
