BARNSTAPLE carnival is always a colourful affair - but this year, Italian friends from Barum's twin town of Susa will be adding their own splash of red, white and green to the proceedings.A group of 16 folk dancers and six musicians from the Italian mountain town will be arriving in North Devon on Thursday, September 17, just in time for carnival day on September 20.They will be performing at the Mayor's charity concert on the Friday night before putting on a similar show in the main arena on Castle Green, on carnival day itself. The troupe will then be taking part in the main parade through the town."At this stage, we think they will be performing between 12noon and 1pm, prior to the crowning of the carnival queen," said town clerk Anne Jenkins who visited Susa during the town's recent "Palio" celebrations last month."The Palio was a sort of medieval festival with lots of noise, competitions and rivalry," she added. "I'd never seen anything like it; it was wonderful. But they don't have anything like the carnival, so I am sure we can give an equally good show."Mrs Jenkins said that the Susa folk dancers reflected local stories and legends from the Susa Valley."They are very spectacular," she said.A civic party - including the Mayor of Susa, four senior councillors and an officer - will also be travelling to Barnstaple. It will be the second visit by the Italians following the signing of a twinning agreement earlier this year.n The Mayor's Charity Concert will also feature performances by the Barnstaple Male Voice Choir, Barnstaple Ladies Choir, Barnstaple Jubilee Singers, and children from Bluecoat Junior School.Tickets for the event in aid of the Barnstaple Stroke Support Group cost £5, and are available from the town council offices on (01271) 373311 or by emailing admin@barnstapletowncouncil.co.uk
