THE Plough Arts Centre audience in Torrington is about to be treated to a new play written and directed by Philip Ayckbourn - son of Britain's best-loved playwright, Sir Alan Ayckbourn.
The Essence of Love is Ayckbourn Junior's first full-length play to tour the UK. It is performed by his professional company, PCK Productions and is visiting The Plough on June 16.
The Essence of Love follows the fortunes of a mother and daughter and a father and son who find themselves on adjacent hotel terraces in Marrakech.
There's anything but love in the air for these four British holidaymakers....but when the gift of a magical elixir gets into the water, unlikely passions take root. This promises to be no ordinary spell in the sun!
"I wanted to explore the farcial nature of infatuation and how a balance may be struck between extremes in love." Philip explains, "Naturally, A Midsummer Night's Dream springs to mind when we think about plays with love potions and the magical element in The Essence of Love also serves as a catalyst for the comedy but I'm more interested, as I'm sure was Shakespeare too, in how the transformation works in the hearts and minds of characters."
