THERE promises to be some ghostly goings on in Barnstaple next month as The Turn of the Screw begins its national tour at the Queen's Theatre, Barnstaple.Henry James' spine-chilling novella, is being brought to life on stage by Theatreworks, a company which has a reputation for successfully adapting and bringing well-loved novels to the stage, and last year, brought the enchanting Little Women to North Devon. The play begins in the present day with friends sharing ghost stories around a fire. One of the guests tells the eerie tale of a young woman who becomes the governess to two orphaned children.Set in a brooding country mansion during the Victorian era, the governess learns that the children's previous carer mysteriously abandoned them, and later, while walking in the grounds, she sees a ghostly figure on the tower. Feeling that the house has been stricken with death, she begins to investigate and discovers that her predecessor Miss Jessel and her lover Peter Quint died under mysterious circumstances. Is the house really is plagued by ghosts, or is it just the imaginings of the young governess away from home for the first time?In the hands of Henry James and Theatreworks, this little tale of terror is an exquisite gem of sexual and psychological ambiguity. The Turn of the Screw stars Honeysuckle Weeks as the governess. Star of stage and screen, she is perhaps best known for playing Samantha alongside Michael Kitchen in ITV1's popular drama, Foyle's War, now in its sixth series. She has also appeared in Midsomer Murders and Where the Heart is. The Turn of the Screw runs from Wednesday, February 6 to Saturday February 9 with evening and matinee performances.
