Well known folk performer and singer songwriter Rev hammer in Bideford on Saturday, September 10

WHEN a Bideford music fan asked her hero, national folk artist Rev Hammer, to headline a charity gig in her home town on Saturday, September 10 she was not expecting him to say yes just like that.

So Grey Murphy was delighted when the highly regarded performer and oft-time collaborator with The Levellers instantly agreed to top the bill at The Palladium Club in her first foray into gig promotion.

Down at the Palli is a one off gig organised by Grey to raise as much money as possible for North Devon Women’s Aid, a charity near to her heart after its help and support enabled her get her life back on track.

Supporting Rev at the gig will be well North Devon’s own Chloe Bix and her band, whose original indie folk sound continues to win over fans both here and further afield.

Rev has a career of 25 years as solo artist, songwriter and musical collaborator, known for his work with The Levellers, as a founding member of Red Sky Coven and also for his successful folk opera Freeborn John, alongside Maddy Prior, Eddi Reader and Rory McLeod plus The Levellers and New Model Army.

“Rev’s music can be quite powerful, with folk, country and a bit of blues and rock, an amalgamation of everything that gels together when he performs,” said Grey.

“He also has a bit of the Levellers sound to him after working with them and a wicked sense of humour too.”

Women’s Aid is a charity that helps both victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse and one grey is keen to give something back to:

“They have helped me so much over the last few years and are continuing to support me, so I would like to support them back as best I can,” she said.

“Chloe Bix has also been fantastic and really supportive. The gig should be a blast!”
