Terriers harry leaders

HARTLAND Terriers lived up to their name in the North Devon Table Tennis League this week as they harried runaway Division 2 leaders Herons all the way and earned themselves a 5-5 draw.

Terriers were led by Malcom Overson, who scored a treble. Both teams had players missing, but the stand-ins made it a good evening of sport, especially the match between Sam Olde and Dave Trett, which Sam took in the fifth set when Dave’s stamina finally gave out - they don’t make 80-plus year old players like they used to!

But despite being held, Herons now need only three points to clinch the Division 2 title.

Smugglers were the top team in action this week and reinforced second spot in Division 1 with a convincing win over Castle Knights. Mathew Thomas won his eighth treble of the season, while David Gray put up a spirited performance to score twice for the Knights.

Division 1: Misfits 8, Commodores 2 (P Kneil 3); Smugglers 8, Castle Knights 2 (M Thomas 3).

Division 2: Bandits 4, Untouchables 6; Herons 5, Hartland Terriers 5 (M Overson 3);

Holsworthy B 7, Littleham 3 (L Weston 3); Hopefuls 3, Torrington B 7 (A Cheung 3).
