Tarka Girls U15 cricket team are Devon champions after winning the county round of the Lady Taverners competition at Cornwood CC this week.
They had a closely contested first match against Torquay, with a top score from Anna Cherrington and a solid innings from Lydia Harris and, despite some great play, Torquay were unable to catch them.
Three more matches against Plympton, Bovey Tracey and Cornwood followed, with Alli Kelly scoring the maximum in each game. Bowlers Emily Ward, Annabel Squire, Millie Squire and Lauren Bowden kept all their opponents under pressure, while wicket keepers Niamh Rees-Doherty and Alli Kelly kept extras to a minimum.
Manager Jan Witheridge was delighted with the girls’ performance. All the girls had trained with North Devon District and Tarka Ladies through the winter and their progress over the past 12 months had been fantastic, she said.
Five of the team play for Devon and have had excellent coaching at the Centre of Excellence in Exeter. Alli Kelly has played for the North Devon Cricket Club and Annabel and Millie Squire and Emily Ward have appeared regularly for their Second and Third X1 mens’ teams at Filleigh.
The girls will now travel to Hampshire for the West Regional finals next week, when Catherine Mitcham, Issy Brown and Holly Moser will join the side.
