Step back into the 1940s this Sunday (June 26) with a free festival of entertainment at Barnstaple Pannier Market to celebrate Armed Forces Day.

The 10-hour event is hosted by The Veterans Charity and will feature live music, entertainment and living history displays, plus a bar and food.

Chivenor Military Wives Choir will be performing, as will popular local singer Tamsin Ball, plus there will be plenty of laughs from Laurel and Hardy – and Winston Churchill is expected to grace the event with his presence too.

Several World War Two military vehicles will also be in the market as people in period dress and living history re-enactors.

Armed Forces Day itself is on Saturday, June 25, this year and will see events taking place up and down the country to show support for the men and women of Britain’s armed forces.

Due to Covid pandemic restrictions it is the first time since 2019 that any public Armed Forces Day event has been possible in Barnstaple.

The Veterans Charity works with veterans of all ages from around the country who need a little help and support.

Danny Greeno, charity CEO, said it was good to be able to organise public events again and raise awareness.

He said: “We hope you will come along and see us on Sunday and enjoy a little of the 1940s atmosphere. We can guarantee some great entertainment with the hugely talented Tamsin plus the excellent Chivenor Military Wives Choir ladies too.

“Along with many charities, we have missed being able to stage events to raise money and tell people about what we do. Our welfare work on behalf of veterans didn’t stop during the pandemic, so events like this are incredibly important to us to raise funds and awareness.”
