MORE than 150 young players and their parents gathered in Barnstaple to recognise the achievements of the North Devon Youth Cricket Association's county players and district teams and to celebrate the end of the league season.
North Devon has been represented by more than 30 players in county squads this summer, across all age groups and in both boys' and girls' teams.
This was an outstanding achievement for a district with just nine clubs, about a quarter of the size of the larger Devon districts.
Some 125 players were selected to join the district squads in 2010 with many going on to play during the summer.
The girls were resounding champions, winning all their games. The Under 15s were the best of the boys' sides, finishing joint top with South Devon.
Player of the season awards went to: under 9, Jack Moore; under 10, Jack Gibbs; under 11, Charlie Webb; under 12, Tom Gidney; under 13, Barney Meadowcroft and Alli Kelly; under 14, Billy Searle; under 15, Joe Kelly.
The league season saw 350-400 young players taking part in 114 scheduled matches from May until August .
The Under 10s league was won by an unbeaten Newton Tracey, with Filleigh runners up. The Under 11s league went to a final match show-down between Bideford and Hatherleigh, with Bideford crowned unbeaten champions.
The results of the Under 13s and Under 15s leagues are subject to review and have not yet been announced. Both were very closely fought right up to the last matches.
