STRONG onshore winds with a choppy three to six feet swell greeted surf club Nippers at Goldcoast in Croyde on Sunday.

Youngsters from from Saunton, Croyde, Woolacombe and Bideford Bay competed against clubs from Cornwall and Wales in the North Devon Interclub Nipper Challenge.

They were split into U11 and U13 age groups to compete in swimming, board paddle, board relay, tapeline and cameron events in the sea and then a one kilometre run, relay sprints and flags on the beach.

The events were hotly contested as more than 200 entrants fought to gain a place in the top three to win points for their teams.

Woolacombe came first overall with Hayle second and Saunton third, making it a successful day for local clubs.
