Bideford warmed up for Saturday’s trip to holders Brixham in the Devon Senior Cup by winning 28-14 at Clevedon.
Clevedon were only two points down mid-way through the second half, but couldn’t go up an extra gear.
And when Clevedon shipped an interception try to the visitors, heads inevitably dropped.
Olly Wickett landed two penalties to put Bideford into a 6-0 lead.
When Clevedon’s Mike Taylor had a clearance kick charged down, Bideford centre Josh King followed up to score and Wickett converted before adding a penalty.
Just before the break Bideford’s scrum crumpled on the tryline and Clevedon were awarded a penalty try that Taylor converted for 16-7 down at the break.
Clevedon got right back in the game when flanker Chris Warren made a breakout run then put Josh Mortimore over for a try. Taylor converted from the touchline.
The turning point came when Wickett scooped up a wayward pass by Will Carpenter and ran 90 metres to score.
Late in the game, the Bideford forwards opened up the defence to send centre Luke Hoyle over for a try that Wickett converted.
