WEST Buckland School pupils were riding high at Hickstead in the Hurstepierpoint National Schools Showjumping Competition.

Olivia Sandford Wood, 13, who has already qualified for the Horse of the Year Show in October, gave a superb performance to win the individual competition.

One of only two riders to go clear on her pony Montego Bay, won the jump-off against the clock by three seconds. She was presented with two trophies, a Hickstead head collar and rug.

In the team competition, it was the turn of the juniors to do the school proud this year with Brendan Darley, Beth Withecombe and Olivia Sandford Wood all jumping excellent clear rounds in the opening round of the competition to become one of the 8 team qualifiers out of 37 starters, some from as far afield as Scotland and Ireland.

The next round in the famous international arena provided a demanding course which produced only eight clear rounds. The West Buckland team finished in fifth place.

The senior team of Phillipa Balfour, Steven May and Katrina Darley, who reached the jump-off at Hickstead last year, were perhaps a bit jaded after a successful day at the North Devon Show and missed out this time.
