A SPECIMEN triggerfish of 3lb 6 1/4 ounces ensured a happy weekend of angling for Darren Short as he scooped first place at the annual Bideford Fishing Festival.

His large visitor from the Mediterranean was overall winner of the two day sea fishing competition, followed in second place by a bass of 7lb 4 3/4 oz caught by Matt Druce. Third went to Tarrant Wotton with a dogfish of 3lb 3/4 oz.

A total of 40 seniors and three juniors entered the event, with Andrew Luxton taking the top two junior places with dogfish of 2lb 6 1/2 oz and 2lb 4 1/4. Cameron Atkinson was third with a triggerfish of 1lb 9 1/2.

Other fish of note weighed in included a small eyed ray of 9lb 1 3/4 which fell to Rick Eavis.

Bideford & District AC would like to thank Summerland's Tackle and Anglers' Haven for donating prizes for the juniors.

Darren's "trigger" also ensured him top spot in the August Barnstaple Rod 'n' Reelers rover, ahead of Mickey Metters' dogfish of 990 grams and a dog of 875 from Tarrent Wotton.
