BARNSTAPLE Swimming Club members had a tough test in their latest round of the Western section of the National Swimming League in Bath, with three of the Premier Division's top six teams taking part.Millfield, runners-up in the whole national competition last year, took the top honours.Barnstaple finished fifth, just four behind fourth-placed Carmarthen.The Barnstaple swimmers produced some excellent swims, attaining 14 personal best times and three club records Abi Jeffery won the girls' 15years 100m backstroke with a personal best time of 1.08.40 and and Ethan Hutchinson won the boys 13years 100m backstroke. The boys 13years 4x50m relay team of Ethan Hutchinson, Joshua Caton, Liam Ward and Ryan Bennett broke the freestyle club record and Ethan, Joshua and Ryan, with Nik Harris, also broke the 13years 4x50m medley record. Another club record was achieved by the 15years 4x50 Medley relay team of Abi Jeffery, Emily Hutchens, Nicole Lathwell and Ellie Parker. Soon the club will say goodbye to two stalwarts of the squad, Ethan and Levon Hutchinson, who are leaving with their parents to live in New Zealand and will be sorely missed by both the Barnstaple club and Devon County.Bath results: 1, Millfield 239pts; 2, Swindon 203; 3.Ferndown Otters 188; 4.Carmarthen 159; 5,Barnstaple 155points; 6, Glamorgan Valleys 96points. * * *BARNSTAPLE Swimming Club's Under 15 water polo team travelled to Exeter for their first round Devon KO match and came home victorious 10-7.Ethan Hutchinson top scored with four goals and there were others by Ryan Bennett (3), Jack Sherbourne (2) and Nic Harris.Captain Peter Bull was man of the match for his man marking of Exeter's large pit forward, with brother Matthew in goal and fellow defender Joe Windsor restricting the Exeter scoring.
