BARNSTAPLE hosted the West Coast Youth Rugby Festival at the weekend and as the host club, the U15s were entered into the competition.

After the fantastic win over Kingsbridge in the Devon Cup the previous week, and with a number of key players unavailable, Barum were keen to use the festival as an opportunity to give everyone available an end of season run-out.

The first day of the competition saw Barum in a pool with Pentyrch, Winchester and Buckingham. In this short game format Barum needed to start well and failed to do that against a well-drilled Pentyrch team who managed to win 10-0.

In their second match Barum played Winchester and in a close game an excellent score by Matt Giblett saw Barum home 5-0.

Buckingham were the final opposition of the day and another close game finished 5-5 with Hallam Chapman claiming the try.

This put Barum in third place in the pool, which meant a quarter-final on the second day against the second placed team from the other pool.

Barum played their quarter-final against Kenfig Hill and playing some free flowing rugby secured a deserved win 10-0 with tries coming from Shane Sexon and Chapman.

In the semi-final against Buckingham it was a much more physical contest and going down to an early try did not help the cause. It wasn’t until a sin-binning to one of the Barum players that they really switched on and raised the intensity going on to win 15-5 with tries from Giblett, Will Harrison and Billy Ashford.

This put Barum in the final against Painswick and, as they did the week before, Barum started with a bang. They ran in two first-half tries through Sexon and Harrison which was enough to secure the win 10-0.

In an amazingly successful season, the U15s have won three trophies the Devon Sevens Cup, the Devon Cup and the West Coast Youth Rugby Festival.
