Several local clubs came to the Torridge estuary at the weekend for Appledore Pilot Gig Club’s supervets regatta.

19 different clubs were represented at the over 50s-only event, including Appledore, Barnstaple, Bideford, Ilfracombe and Torridge.

Falmouth’s supervet crew were winners of the ladies’ event, with Ilfracombe coming a close second and Weymouth taking third.

The men’s event trophy went to Teign, with Bristol in second place, and the Falmouth men third after coming into contact with a sandbank.

A ‘barbarians’ race, where both ladies and men from different clubs are mixed in each boat, proved extremely popular with those who hadn’t made it through to the final, and although still highly competitive, it reflected the camaraderie that exists between the clubs.
