North Devon angling scene, with Tony Gussin...
A specimen smoothound brought the 2015/16 North Devon League season to a close on Sunday night.
Lee Watts won the end of season champion of champions match with his ‘smoothie’ of 12lb 11 ¼ ounces, weighing in at 127.131 per cent.
Second place went to Stephen Luxton with another hound of 11lb 2 ½ oz (111.719 per cent) and Lee also had a good bull huss of 10lb 1oz.
A couple of other decent hounds were brought to the scales as proof that the hounding season is now well and truly underway.
These hard-fighting members of the shark family usually fall to peeler crab baits and can be caught from numerous marks on both sides of Bideford Bay.
The team winners of this year’s North Devon League was Bideford A with 57 points, while Barnstaple Rod ‘n’ Reelers came in as runners up.
The shield for best specimen of the year went to Antony Smith from Bideford for a fine spurdog of 14lb 4oz, or 178 per cent.
The first heat of the 2016/17 season will be held on the weekend of June 11-12, with the weigh in at Rolle Quay in Barnstaple.
It would be nice to see a few new teams enter this year and it’s a good sociable competition that no one takes too seriously.
Entry is £10 for a team of four and there are cash payouts each month for the top three in each heat.
You do not need to be in a fishing club – groups of friends, work mates, club or company teams are all very welcome.
